Are there Study Hall requirements?
Study Hall requirements vary by team. The requirements are provided to the athlete by the coach and the athletic academic advisor and are based on the student’s academic performance and grade point average.
Are there tutors available for all classes?
Student-Athlete Services has a pool of tutors for a variety of subjects. If a request is made for a class not covered by this pool of tutors, SAS will attempt to find and hire a tutor for that class. All tutors employed by SAS must have earned a B+ or higher grade in the class they tutor and have a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher. All tutoring takes place in the APC.
Are there other academic resources available?
There are other resources available to all JMU students. These include: The Science and Math Learning Center, Communication Center, University Writing Center and others. Please see the attached link for JMU Learning Centers for more detailed information.

Will I need to bring my own computer?
No, but many students do bring their desktop or laptop computer with them. There are computer labs available throughout campus and in most academic buildings. Some labs are open 24 hours a day. SAS has a computer lab available to student-athletes during our hours of operation. SAS also has laptops that can be checked out by the student-athletes when travelling for competition or for meetings with tutors or for study hall.
Who monitors my academic progress?
Every JMU student is assigned an academic advisor in his/her major and minor area of study. JMU student-athletes also have an athletic academic advisor assigned to their team. Both major and athletic academic advisors assist the student-athletes in progressing towards earning their degree from JMU. The athletic academic advisor also monitors the student-athletes’ NCAA eligibility status. The major advisor is the one who signs the student’s application for graduation and degree completion. Developing a relationship with the major advisor is very important!
What is SAAC and how can I participate in it?
SAAC stands for Student-Athlete Advisory Council. This is a group of student-athletes with representation from all sports teams that holds regular meetings to discuss student-athlete well-being and other issues like community service opportunities for teams and the athletics department and social events for all student-athletes. The teams’ representatives report back to their teammates. You can participate by being a team representative or by attending the events planned by the council. Please see the attached link for more detailed information.
